An alternative to 3M 8992 green polyester tape

3M 8992 is the green silicone-adhesive polyester tape most powder coaters know by number. ETS supplies the same construction, high-temperature PET tape (AHS-940x), from Toronto, slit to your widths, with a free sample to run through your own oven first.

Check before you switch

Your cure profile. 3M lists 8992 to 204°C. Our AHS-940x is rated 180°C continuous and 220°C short-term, which covers most powder cure cycles. If your oven sits above 180°C for long dwell times, test first or look at our premium silicone crepe (AHS-31xx, 250°C continuous).

Thickness and edge. A thicker tape gives a firmer edge but conforms less. Tell us what you mask (threads, flat faces, curved edges) and we will match the gauge.

Clean peel on your substrate. Run a sample through a full cure and peel it hot and cold. Residue depends on substrate and powder as much as on the tape.

Full product detail is in our Powder coat masking guide.

Where it is used

  • Masking threads, bores and mating faces before powder coating
  • Anodizing and plating masking
  • Holding plugs and caps in place through the cure oven
  • Die-cut dots and discs for repeat holes

Test it before you buy

Send us the 3M 8992 size you use now, your process temperature and your substrate. We will send a free sample of AHS-940x with its datasheet so you can run it on your own parts. In the GTA we can drop it off in person.

Frequently asked questions

Is AHS-940x the same as 3M 8992?

It has the same construction (green polyester film with a silicone adhesive), but it is not a certified equivalent. Ratings differ: 3M lists 8992 to 204°C, and AHS-940x is rated 180°C continuous and 220°C short-term. Test a sample on your own cure cycle before switching.

Can you cut it to the widths I use now?

Yes. Tell us the widths and roll lengths you buy today and we will quote custom slitting to match, including small widths for threads and fine edges.

Do you make masking dots and discs too?

Yes. We die-cut dots and discs from the same PET material in the diameters you use. Send the sizes and quantities.

How do I get a sample?

Use the form on this page and choose “Free sample request”. In the GTA we can drop the sample off in person.
