Polyimide tape at a glance

Polyimide film keeps its strength and its electrical insulation at temperatures where PET and most other films fail. Paired with a silicone adhesive it becomes the standard masking and insulating tape on soldering lines and in motors and battery packs.

ETS supplies it three ways: single-side tape for masking and insulating, double-sided tape for bonding components under heat, and bare film in a 12–125µm thickness range for converting and winding.

Where polyimide tape is used

  • Masking connectors and pads during PCB wave soldering
  • Insulating motor and coil windings
  • Fixing and insulating battery tabs and cells
  • Bonding components that see sustained heat (double-sided)
  • Die-cut masks, shields and insulating washers made from film or tape

Temperatures are typical values from the manufacturer’s data. Confirm against the datasheet for your process before you buy — we send it with your quote. Kapton is a registered trademark of DuPont. ETS polyimide tape is not DuPont-branded; “Kapton-type” describes the film type only.

Single-side, double-sided or film?

Use single-side tape when you need to mask or wrap and then peel it off clean, or to leave insulation in place. Use double-sided tape to bond parts under heat. Use film when you are converting it yourself or need specific thickness.

Frequently asked questions

What is polyimide tape, and is it the same as Kapton tape?

Polyimide tape is a heat-resistant film with a silicone adhesive. “Kapton” is DuPont’s brand name for its polyimide film; ETS supplies Kapton-type polyimide tape that is not DuPont-branded.

What temperature does polyimide tape handle?

Our single- and double-sided tapes are rated 260°C continuous and 300°C short-term. The bare film is rated 300°C continuous and 350°C short-term. Confirm against the datasheet for your process.

Does it work for wave soldering?

Yes — single-side polyimide tape with silicone adhesive is a standard choice for masking during wave soldering. Tell us your solder temperature and dwell time and we will confirm the grade.

Can you cut it to a shape or custom width?

Yes. We quote custom slitting and die-cut shapes. Send a drawing or a sample part.
