Choosing winding and layer insulation tape

Motor and transformer builders usually need three things from an insulation tape: dielectric strength, a temperature rating that clears the winding class, and an adhesive that does not creep. ETS supplies three constructions that cover most winding, layer-wrap and harnessing jobs.

Electrical mylar is a PET film tape for winding wrap with high dielectric strength. Acetate cloth is a fabric tape with rubber adhesive, commonly used for transformer layer wrap and harnessing. Glass fiber tape is a high-tensile composite for heavy fixing and strapping of electrical components.

Where these tapes are used

  • Winding and layer insulation in transformers
  • Motor winding wrap and slot insulation
  • Harness wrapping and bundling
  • Flame-retardant strapping of electrical components
  • Securing components inside enclosures and assemblies

Temperatures are typical values from the manufacturer’s data. Confirm against the datasheet for your process before you buy — we send it with your quote.

Matching tape to your winding class

Check the continuous temperature rating against your winding or insulation class first, then dielectric strength, then adhesive type. If your winding runs hotter than these tapes allow, look at polyimide tape (260°C continuous).

Send us your operating temperature, voltage and dimensions and we will point you to the right series.

Frequently asked questions

Which tape should I use for transformer layer insulation?

Acetate cloth tape (AHS-41xx) and electrical mylar tape (AHS-42xx) are the usual starting points. Share your operating temperature and voltage and we will recommend one.

What is the breakdown voltage of your electrical mylar tape?

Our electrical mylar tape (AHS-42xx) is rated ≥5.5kV breakdown on the manufacturer’s data. We can send the datasheet with the test method.

Is flame-retardant tape available?

Yes. Electrical mylar tape is flame-resistant, and acetate cloth tape is available in a flame-retardant option.

Can you supply custom widths?

Yes. Custom slitting to your width and roll length is available — send your dimensions with your quote request.
