An alternative to 3M 5490 PTFE film tape

3M 5490 is an extruded PTFE film tape with silicone adhesive, used where parts need to slide or release cleanly. ETS supplies PTFE film (AHS-95xx) from Toronto for the same jobs, with custom widths and die-cut parts.

Check before you switch

Film or glass cloth? Film is smoother and more conformable. If the tape wears through on a sealing bar or sliding surface, PTFE-coated glass cloth (like 3M 5451 or our AHS-96xx) lasts longer.

Adhesive. Confirm the adhesive type on the ETS datasheet against what your application needs, especially if the surface runs hot.

Thickness. A thicker film lasts longer against abrasion. Tell us the wear you see today and we will match the gauge.

Full product detail is in our PTFE tape guide.

Where it is used

  • Low-friction surfaces on chutes, guides and slides
  • Non-stick and release surfaces on hot equipment
  • Dielectric insulation and conductor wrap
  • Die-cut PTFE pads and washers

Test it before you buy

Send us the 3M 5490 size you use now, your process temperature and your substrate. We will send a free sample of AHS-95xx with its datasheet so you can run it on your own parts. In the GTA we can drop it off in person.

Frequently asked questions

Is AHS-95xx the same as 3M 5490?

Both are PTFE film tapes, but they are not certified equivalents. Ratings and thickness differ, so compare both datasheets and test a sample on your equipment before switching.

Should I use PTFE film or PTFE glass cloth?

Use film for smooth, conformable low-friction surfaces. Use PTFE-coated glass cloth where abrasion and heat wear the tape out, such as heat-sealer jaws. See our 3M 5451 page for the glass cloth option.

Do you sell it in custom widths?

Yes. We quote custom slitting and die-cut PTFE parts. Send your dimensions.

How do I get a sample?
